What is isthmohyla rivularis?

Isthmohyla rivularis, commonly known as the Río Isthmus treefrog, is a species of frog found in Costa Rica and Panama. They are arboreal and can be found in wet forests near streams and rivers.

These frogs are small, with males reaching a maximum length of 39 mm and females reaching 47 mm. Their coloration can vary, but they typically have a brown or gray dorsum with dark markings. The skin on their back is granulated, and they have webbed fingers and toes.

Males have a distinct call that is high-pitched and repetitive, often heard during the rainy season. Females lay their eggs on leaves overhanging water, and once hatched, the tadpoles drop into the water below where they develop.

Isthmohyla rivularis faces threats from habitat destruction, chytrid fungus, and pollution. It is listed as a near-threatened species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
